Joanne Dickson
I’m Joanne, a Paisley-based photographer with a love for photographing real people and real life as it happens. I studied photography at college, and I’ve been working behind the camera for over a decade, photographing weddings, newborns, growing families and important life events.
Photography has been part of my working life for many years, and what’s kept me doing it is the variety and meaning behind each shoot. No two weddings are the same, no two families are alike, and every stage of life brings something different. I enjoy documenting those moments in a way that feels natural and honest rather than staged or overworked.
I believe photographs should reflect who you really are and what that time in your life felt like, not just what it looked like.
My story
I trained in photography at college, where I built a strong technical foundation and learned how to work confidently with lighting, composition and camera settings. In the early days of my career, my work focused more on places and environments, and I was published online by Vogue Italia for a series photographing landmarks, including locations such as the London Underground.
Over time, my focus naturally shifted towards photographing people. I found myself drawn more to the stories, connections and emotions behind the images, rather than the setting alone. That move towards people-led photography is what shaped the direction of my work and continues to influence how I photograph today.
Much of my experience has come from working in real-life situations where things don’t always go to plan. Weddings can be fast-paced and emotional, newborn sessions require patience and flexibility, and family life is often unpredictable. That hands-on experience has shaped how I work and how I approach each shoot.
Alongside photography, I’m a mum of three and a gran, which gives me a deeper understanding of how meaningful photographs can become over time. I know how quickly children grow, how fleeting certain stages are, and how important it is to have images that genuinely reflect those moments. That perspective runs through everything I do.
How I work
My approach is calm, friendly and unobtrusive. I don’t expect anyone to arrive knowing how to pose or what to do, and I keep things relaxed throughout each session.
When photographing weddings, I focus on capturing the day as it naturally unfolds, from the big moments to the quieter ones that often mean the most. During newborn and family sessions, I work at a comfortable pace, allowing time for breaks and letting things happen naturally rather than forcing poses or expressions.
For anyone who feels nervous about being photographed, you’re not alone. Most people feel that way at first. Part of my role is to help you feel at ease, so the photographs feel natural and true to you. I’ll offer gentle guidance when needed and step back when the moment unfolds on its own.
